Ghana’s port city of Tema has again found itself at the centre of a major narcotics interception, after police intercepted 866 parcels of a white powdered substance suspected to be cocaine, concealed inside sacks of gari destined for export. Three suspects a Dutch national and two Ghanaians are now in police custody as investigations continue into what appears to be a sophisticated attempt to smuggle the consignment out of the country disguised as a routine foodstuff export.

An intelligence-led operation inside the port enclave
The seizure followed an intelligence-led operation conducted by police at about 8 pm on Wednesday, August 5, 2026. According to sources close to the operation, the suspects were picked up while supervising a group of men loading sacks of gari and konkonte into a 40-foot container for export at a warehouse within the Tema Port enclave. The suspects, together with the truck used in the operation and the intercepted parcels, remain in police custody as investigators work to establish the full scope of the trafficking network behind the shipment.

A familiar concealment method, an unusually large haul
The use of everyday food exports gari and konkonte, staples routinely shipped from Ghana to diaspora markets abroad to mask narcotics consignments is a concealment method Ghanaian security agencies have encountered before, but the scale of this seizure stands out. At 866 parcels, this bust adds to a string of major narcotics interceptions the Tema Regional Police Command has recorded in recent months, underscoring both the persistence of trafficking networks routing product through the port and the increasing sophistication of the intelligence operations now being deployed to intercept them.

What happens next
As is standard procedure in such cases, samples of the seized substance will need to be forwarded to the Forensic Science Laboratory for analysis to formally confirm the substance as cocaine before prosecution can proceed. The involvement of a Dutch national alongside two Ghanaian suspects also raises the likelihood of an international dimension to the case, potentially drawing in Interpol or bilateral cooperation with Dutch authorities as investigators trace the shipment’s intended destination and the wider network that organized it. Ghanaian authorities will also need to establish whether the warehouse and export documentation used were legitimately obtained or fraudulently secured to facilitate the smuggling attempt a detail that will matter considerably for how far up the supply chain prosecutors are ultimately able to reach.

A port under pressure
For Tema, Ghana’s busiest port and a critical node in West Africa’s maritime trade, the bust is the latest reminder of the persistent challenge posed by narcotics trafficking routed through its facilities. Recurrent interceptions of parcels hidden in produce, concealed in trucks, or smuggled through container shipments point to Tema’s continued attractiveness to trafficking networks exploiting the volume and speed of legitimate port commerce to move illicit cargo. Each new seizure adds pressure on port authorities and law enforcement to tighten screening protocols without unduly slowing the legitimate trade that Tema’s economy, and the wider Ghanaian export sector, depends on.

The case now moves to the investigative and prosecutorial stage, where the real test will be whether Ghanaian authorities can trace this consignment beyond the three suspects already in custody to the wider network that financed, organized and intended to profit from it.
