Ghanaian sprint sensation Benjamin Azamati made a stunning start to his 2026 Commonwealth Games campaign by cruising into the men’s 100m semi-finals with a record-breaking performance.

Azamati powered to victory in his opening heat in a blistering 10.00 seconds, setting the fastest time ever recorded in a men’s 100m heat at the Commonwealth Games.

The remarkable run also matched his season’s best as he signaled his intent to challenge for a medal.

Despite his impressive display, the Ghanaian remained measured in his assessment, revealing that he is only just returning to competition after a spell away from the track.

“I was away for like a month. I just got back to racing… so I think it’s fine to be able to come out here and race and equal my season best,” Azamati said after the race.

The 26-year-old acknowledged that the semi-finals will present a much sterner challenge but insisted his focus remains on delivering another strong performance.

“The real test is tomorrow, which has more tougher competition… we come here to do our best tomorrow,” he added.

Azamati was not the only Ghanaian sprinter to impress, as Abdul-Rasheed Saminu also advanced to the semi-finals in commanding fashion.

Saminu won his heat in a season’s best time of 10.01 seconds, reinforcing Ghana’s strong presence in the men’s sprint competition.

With both of the country’s leading sprinters safely through to the next stage, optimism is growing within Team Ghana over its prospects on the track.

Their outstanding performances have boosted hopes of podium finishes in the individual 100m event, while also strengthening expectations for a strong challenge in the sprint relay.
