Tribute to Mayor Rohey Malick Lowe as African Woman of the year 2024

Mayor Rohey Malick Lowe, Mayor of The Gambia capital Banjul was named ‘African Woman of the Year for 2024’ by Netherlands-based ‘The Voice news magazine’, organisers of the ‘Voice Achievers Awards’.

The Voice Achievers Award 2024, a splendid celebration of exceptional accomplishments, resilience, and the vibrant African culture, unfolded in a dazzling ceremony at Villa Rosa Kempinski Hotel, Nairobi Kenya  on 16th August 2024 where her Lordship,Mayor Lowe received the prestigious African Woman of the Year 2024 award.

Her award marked the highpoint in the Voice magazine’s 25th-anniversary celebrations.

Mayor Lowe was celebrated for her exceptional accomplishments as a woman politician and her commitment to her work,which was lauded as an individual with a heart of compassion. Her impassioned remarks during the ceremony earned her a standing ovation from the captivated audience. Her resume includes her current position as the Mayor of Banjul, The Capital city of The Gambia; the President of the Local elected women in Africa(REFELA); Vice president of The Global Parliament of Mayors (GPM); Second Vice President of The United Democratic Party (UDP); Board Member of The Francis Eduward Referred Hospital and the Chairperson of the Banjul Youth Diplomats.

In her victory speech, she took the audience through her struggles as a woman to gain elective position in The Gambia.

“It is very difficult to take leadership in Africa if you are a woman, and that’s the reality. This award is not for me, it’s for the Gambian woman,” she said after receiving her award from Pastor Ndubuisi Elvis Iruh, Publisher and Editor-in-Chief of ‘The Voice’ magazine and chairman of the Voice Achievers Award Committee.

“Her unwavering allegiance and dedication to her country, The Gambia is unequalled and while receiving this award nomination, she informed the organisers that she is most humbled for the recognition and she dedicates the award to the good people of  Banjul and the Gambia in general who makes her to work hard and they appreciate her contribution to see Gambia among the league of progressive countries in Africa,” organisers said of the Mayor.

She expressed her profound joy in supporting and empowering youth, thereby contributing to the betterment of the Gambia and the realization of dreams.

Another noteworthy highlight of the evening was the Africa Iconic Leadership award presented to Dr. Mrs. Idah Oginda for her exceptional acts of philanthropy resonated deeply with the audience, and her recognition was met with widespread applause and admiration.

Among the other distinguished awardees were personalities such as Archbishop Dr. Jerry Kibarabara (Africa Life Time Achievers Award); Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti as “Governor of the Year”;  Governor Gladys Wanga of Homabay County (Africa Leadership Excellence Award); Bishop Dr. Pius Muiru (Africa Spiritual Leadership Award), Rev. Amb. Lucy Muiru (Africa Heroine Award); Faith Kipyegon (Africa Trailblazer Award), Beatrice Chebet (Sportswoman of the Year); Olympic champion David Rudisha (Africa Legendary Sports Award); Her Excellency, Shaikha Dr. Fatimah Tagwai Aji, FMCA (Iconic Woman Leadership Award); His Excellency, Ambassador Tareq Ziad al Saif (Humanitarian Excellence Award); Dr. Silpah Owich (Excellence Award for Entrepreneurship); Dr Johnny Sei-Hoe Hon MH ) Excellence Award for Global Relations); Rev. Three Goodwill Ambassador Awards were also recognized, the list includes Her Royal Highness, Queen Mother Deli Matsebula (The Voice Goodwill Ambassador); nDr. Maxwel Okoth (The Voice Goodwill Ambassador) and your Goodwill Ambassador, Blessy Lindiwe Muoki (The Voice Young Goodwill Ambassador).
