Lookman Wins Africa 2024 Best Footballer Award

Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman has been finally crowned the “African Footballer of the Year Award Winner for 2024. He received it from Confederation of African Football, CAF, after a long intensed growing anxiety by the talented footballer, his fans, the media and the football community globally.

The 27-year-old Atalanta FC of Italy “talisman” won the prestigious award at a very colourful award event held on Monday night at the Palais des Congrès in Marrakech Morocco.

The Nigerian outstanding super star defeated tough competitors and fellow nominees such as top pre-award favourite, Achraf Hakimi of (Morocco/PSG), Simon Adingra, of (Ivory Coast/Brighton), Serhou Guirassy of (Guinea/Borussia Dortmund), and Ronwen Williams of (South Africa/Mamelodi Sundowns) to clinch the African most prestigious football title.

Lookman’s victory is so historical as he proudly wrote his name in gold among the celebrated iconic list of Nigerian African Best Footballer Award Winners since 1993, When Nigeria’s all time highest goal scoring legend Rashidi Yekini, first bagged the award. Other winners are Emmanuel Amuneke (1994), Nwankwo Kanu (1996 and 1999), Victor Ikpeba (1997), and Victor Osimhen (2023). Noteworthy, with Lookman CAF award, Nigeria has become the biggest winner of the award on the African continent.

The mercurial forward who was a finalist at the last AFCON, gave Nigeria a back- to -back win of the award. He grandly took over from 2023 winner, Victor Osimhen, of Nigeria and Galatasaray of Turkey. He was gratefully handed the award trophy by the chief host of the award, Dr Patrice Motsepe, the CAF President and Special Guest of Honuor, Gianni Infantino, the President of World football governing body, FIFA.

The Atalanta star-performer duly stood out for the award as he recommended a mega-successful season for his club and country. Notably, Lookman scored a first time stunning Europa final hat-trick for Atalanta in the Europa League final. Inaddition, the unstoppable attacker justified his esteemed position as one of African, Europe and Global top forwards with crucial goals on the global stage. This feat earned him an honourable 14th place in World Best Footballer Award, Ballon d’or early this year. The highest placing for Africa in this global reputable award.
