Ghana to become first LNG Importer in sub-Saharan Africa

In a bid to develop gas-fired power generation, Ghana is set to become sub-Saharan Africa’s first liquefied natural gas (LNG) importer, with the Tema LNG terminal ready to receive its first cargo by the end of the first quarter of 2021. This will add to the country’s imports from Nigeria through the West African Gas Pipeline.

The Tema LNG terminal, with capacity to import 1.7 million metric tons per year of LNG, is controlled by Helios Investment Partners and Africa Infrastructure Investment Managers. The terminal has a dedicated floating regasification vessel, with a separate LNG storage vessel.

“The terminal at Tema will be mechanically ready for full operation at the end of March,” S&P Global Platts quoted a project spokesman. “We are waiting for Shell, the supplier, and GNPC as the offtaker to decide and confirm the delivery date for their first cargo to arrive at the terminal,” he added.

Oil and gas major Shell will supply LNG under a long-term contract, making it the first supplier of LNG to Ghana. Reganosa – a transmission and regasification company – will operate and maintain the terminal as well as a 6 km pipeline.
