PoliticsJuly 11, 2023Gabon’s President Ali Bongo has announced third term bidShareTweetPostGabon’s President, Ali Bongo Ondimba, recently announced his intention to run for a third term in the upcoming presidential elections in August. The Bongo family has been in power in Gabon for 55 years, with Ali Bongo succeeding his father, Omar Bongo, in 2009 after more than 40 years in power. The previous elections in 2016 were fraught with allegations of fraud, with Ali Bongo winning by a margin of less than 6,000 votes against opposition candidate Jean Ping. Ping contested the results and declared himself the winner. However, his passport was confiscated and he was only allowed to leave the country this year after being under a travel ban for five years.
