Two young Canadian students have been kidnapped in the African nation of Ghana.

The 19 and 20-year-old women, who have not been publicly identified, were taken at gunpoint in Kumasi, the country’s second largest city, the BBC said in a report.

“Security agencies are working closely together to get them rescued, and the perpetrators arrested,” said David Eklu, assistant commissioner of police, told the BBC.

The women were volunteers with Youth Challenge International, a Toronto-based international development organization.

The group focuses on sending youth volunteers to various parts of the world to undertake and support educational, organizational development, health and wellness initiatives.

On its website, the government agency says Canadian travellers should exercise a “high degree of caution” when travelling to Ghana, warning of crime in large cities, including the potential for petty and violent crime.

“Violent crimes, including armed robbery and kidnapping, may occur. Be aware of your surroundings and avoid walking alone or displaying signs of wealth,” it says.

Global Affairs Canada issued the following statement to Daily Hive over the matter:

“We are aware that Canadian citizens have been kidnapped in Ghana. Canadian officials are in contact with the individuals’ family and are providing assistance. Canadian government officials in Ghana are working closely with local authorities. The Government of Canada’s first priority is always the safety and security of its citizens. For this reason, we will not comment on or release any information which may compromise ongoing efforts or endanger the safety of Canadians.”
