President Mahama Prioritizes Ghana Job Creation Over World Cup Travel Subsidies

Ghanaian football enthusiasts dreaming of a state sponsored trip to the 2026 FIFA World Cup have been met with a firm reality check from the Jubilee House. President John Dramani Mahama has officially confirmed that the government will not provide public funding to fly supporters to the tournament hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
The decision marks a strict adherence to the Dzamefe Commission of Inquiry report which explicitly warned against the use of taxpayer money for such ventures following previous tournament scandals. During a fundraising event on Friday, the President highlighted the staggering financial implications of state sponsorship, noting that even a modest delegation of 200 fans would drain nearly $2 million from the national coffers.
While acknowledging the emotional value of having the “Black Stars” cheered on by a live Ghanaian audience, President Mahama insisted that national priorities must shift toward sustainable economic development. He argued that the millions required for travel logistics would be better utilized in sectors like job creation and infrastructure.
This policy shift places the burden of travel on the fans themselves. Those hoping to witness the World Cup in person will now need to secure private sponsorships or tap into personal savings, signaling an end to the era of government funded fan expeditions in Ghana.
