Iran’s ambassador to Nigeria, Gholamreza Mahdavi Raja, has announced Tehran’s readiness to assist Nigeria in its ongoing battle against terrorism. In recent statements, the envoy highlighted Iran’s willingness to share counterterrorism expertise to combat groups such as Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).

Speaking amid heightened scrutiny, Ambassador Raja emphasized that Iran strongly condemns terrorism in all forms and positions itself as a victim of such violence rather than a sponsor. He pointed out that Iran has endured numerous terrorist attacks and therefore understands the challenges faced by nations like Nigeria. “We are ready to lend a helping hand,” Raja stated. “We know Nigeria faces threats from Boko Haram, ISWAP, and others. We are ready to share our experience in counterterrorism.

“The ambassador’s remarks came in response to accusations from Israel’s ambassador to Nigeria, who claimed that Iran sponsors Islamic movements across West Africa to promote extremism. These allegations surfaced around protests by members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), who demonstrated following the reported killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in US-Israeli strikes earlier this year. Raja dismissed the claims as baseless and politically motivated propaganda from a regime with its own history of violence. He clarified that Iran’s connections to Nigerian Islamic groups remain limited to spiritual and cultural ties, with no political or operational involvement.

Raja reiterated Iran’s condemnation of terrorist attacks in Nigeria and across Africa, expressing Tehran’s desire to cooperate with African governments in fighting insurgency. The offer arrives at a time when Nigeria continues to grapple with persistent security threats in its northern regions, where Boko Haram and ISWAP have caused widespread instability for over a decade.

Public reactions on social media have varied, with some Nigerians expressing skepticism about Iran’s intentions given its designation by the United States as a state sponsor of terrorism, while others welcomed any potential international support against domestic insurgents. The development underscores the complex geopolitical dynamics influencing West African security discussions.
