Osimhen Personally Convinced Me To Join Galatasaray — Rafael Leão
Rafael Leão has opened up on his close friendship with Nigerian forward Victor Osimhen, revealing that their bond played a significant role in his decision to join Galatasaray ahead of other clubs.
Speaking to Forza Cimbom, the Portuguese international explained that his relationship with Osimhen was a major factor when weighing up his transfer options, ultimately swaying his choice in favour of the Turkish giants over rival suitors.
He also spoke enthusiastically about the prospect of linking up with the Nigerian frontman in pursuit of silverware both domestically and on the European stage.
“We had a meeting with Osimhen before the transfer. He’s a very good friend of mine,” Leão said. “Now we’re together, we’ll do good work, we’ll achieve beautiful things, and we’ll achieve big things for Galatasaray! We want to become champions; we want to rise high in Europe.”
Reports indicate that Osimhen played a direct role in Leão’s move, personally reaching out to the winger during the transfer window to encourage him to snub interest from Aston Villa and other European clubs in favour of Istanbul.
Interestingly, the duo’s history dates back to their time together at Lille in France, before their paths crossed again as opponents during separate stints in Italy’s Serie A.
Osimhen, meanwhile, continues to enjoy a blistering start to life in Turkey. The Nigerian was directly involved in Galatasaray’s dramatic 3-2 comeback win over Göztepe at RAMS Park on Saturday, scoring once and providing an assist to help his side leapfrog to the summit of the Süper Lig table after three rounds of fixtures.
That performance takes his tally to five goals in just three league appearances so far this season, a remarkable start that highlights the difference he has made to Galatasaray’s attack since arriving at the club.
