Nigeria Seals $8.5m Adidas Deal, Ends 11-Year Nike Partnership
Nigeria is set to sever its 11-year partnership with Nike, switching allegiance back to adidas after sealing an equipment agreement worth $8.5million annually, a deal the Nigeria Football Federation describes as the biggest of its kind on the continent.
Outgoing NFF president Ibrahim Gusau, who stepped down alongside the federation’s executive committee on Thursday, revealed the terms during a press briefing in Abuja.
He explained that adidas will hand over $4.5million yearly in direct payments, alongside $4million worth of kits and equipment for Nigeria’s various national sides. An additional 20 percent royalty on merchandise sales could push the overall value even higher.
Gusau noted that the deal, though finalised ahead of schedule, surpasses any comparable arrangement on the continent, easily eclipsing Morocco’s reported $1.7million agreement with Puma.
He was critical of the outgoing Nike deal, signed back in 2015, describing its terms as outdated and insufficient for the federation’s growing needs, forcing officials to personally source extra kits for squads such as the U-20 Women’s team at their World Cup outing in Poland.
According to Gusau, negotiations with Nike for better terms began in 2024 but stalled, pushing the NFF to explore other options. Nike, despite holding matching rights, failed to compete with adidas’ offer.
Nigeria previously wore adidas during their 1994 AFCON triumph and 2013 title win, before switching to Nike in 2015. Gusau added that adidas’ stronger retail presence in Nigeria was a key factor behind the switch, with plans to significantly boost NFF’s future earnings through royalties.
