King Mohammed VI of Morocco on Tuesday named Marrakesh mayor Fatima Ezzahra El Mansouri as the country’s first-ever woman prime minister, the royal cabinet said, after her party won last week’s parliamentary election.

El Mansouri, who has also served as the kingdom’s minister of habitat, was received by King Mohamed VI at the royal palace and was “tasked with forming the new government”, the cabinet said.

The former lawyer, whose Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM) is part of the kingdom’s ruling coalition, is the second woman to serve as prime minister in the Arab world after Najla Bouden in Tunisia.

Her government is expected to make billions of dollars in investments linked to the 2030 FIFA World Cup, while delivering on promises to fight inflation, raise wages and create jobs.
