Lagos Enrolls 16,000 Sanitation Workers with Health Insurance Expansion

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has officially enrolled approximately 16,000 sanitation officers into a comprehensive health insurance scheme. This initiative aims to provide essential healthcare access to the frontline workers responsible for maintaining the environmental standards of Africa’s most populous city.
The announcement was made by the Managing Director of LAWMA, Muyiwa Gbadegesin, during an event celebrating International Women’s Day 2026. Under this new arrangement, workers will be integrated into the Ilera Eko Health Insurance Scheme, a state-managed program designed to offer affordable medical services.
Comprehensive Healthcare Access
Once the enrollment process is complete, sanitation officers will have the right to access medical treatments at various primary and secondary health facilities throughout Lagos. Mr. Gbadegesin emphasized that this system does more than just benefit the individual workers. It also strengthens the broader healthcare infrastructure by providing consistent funding to hospitals through capitation. These funds allow medical centers to improve their facilities and increase their professional staff numbers.
Leading by Example
The decision to prioritize the LAWMA workforce was a deliberate move by the state government to demonstrate its commitment to the insurance program. Mr. Gbadegesin noted that since the agency represents one of the largest frontline workforces in the country, it was vital for them to be the initial beneficiaries of the initiative. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has already approved the rollout, and health insurance cards are expected to be distributed to the workers shortly.
Celebrating International Women’s Day
The announcement coincided with a broader welfare program held under the theme of “Give to Gain.” This event focused on the health and general well-being of the sanitation staff, many of whom are women. Beyond the insurance news, the day included:
- Comprehensive medical screenings for all attending staff.
- The distribution of essential food items to support household nutrition.
- Financial contributions and medical supplies provided by private sector partners.
Mr. Gbadegesin praised the dedication of the workers, noting that their daily labor is fundamental to the city’s functionality. He also acknowledged the support of corporate partners such as Agatam, Tolaram Group, and Wastecare Group. Their contributions highlight a growing trend of private sector involvement in public welfare, ensuring a healthier workforce and a cleaner urban environment for all Lagos residents.
The sanitation officers expressed their appreciation for the recognition, noting that the inclusion in a formal health scheme provides a significant layer of security for their families and futures.
