FIFA Demands Answers From Nigeria Over Alleged Government Interference In NFF

By Okiki Oluwasegun

FIFA has sought clarification from Nigerian football authorities over reports of alleged government interference in the affairs of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

In a letter dated September 1, 2026, FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafström reportedly raised concerns about the circumstances surrounding NFF President Ibrahim Gusau’s resignation.

According to the report, FIFA was informed that Gusau stepped down following an alleged directive from the Presidency.

The world football governing body stressed that its rules require national football associations to operate independently and without interference from governments or other external parties.

FIFA has therefore requested written confirmation that Gusau’s resignation was voluntary and made without pressure from government officials.

The organisation also asked the Federal Government to provide clarification on what led to the development.

The matter could have serious consequences if FIFA determines that Nigeria’s football administration has been subjected to undue political influence.

FIFA’s statutes provide protections for the independence of member associations and prohibit third-party interference in their internal affairs.

Beyond seeking clarification over Gusau’s departure, FIFA has also asked for assurances that the NFF will continue conducting its activities in line with FIFA regulations and its own statutes.

The development comes at a sensitive period for Nigerian football, with the NFF facing important administrative and sporting responsibilities.

The response from Nigerian authorities could determine whether the situation is resolved through clarification or escalates into disciplinary action from FIFA.
