Fenerbahce had every reason to celebrate cleanly on Wednesday night. A 2-1 win away at Lyon sealed a 3-2 aggregate victory in the Champions League playoff round and delivered the Istanbul giants their first appearance in the competition’s league phase in 17 years a genuine milestone for a club that has spent nearly two decades on Europe’s periphery. Goals from Vedat Muriqi and Archie Brown did the job on the pitch. What followed at the final whistle turned a historic result into a headline for entirely the wrong reasons.

The scoreline
The tie had been level on aggregate coming into the second leg after a 1-1 draw in Istanbul the previous week. At the Groupama Stadium in Décines-Charpieu, Fenerbahce moved quickly, going 2-0 up in the first half before Lyon pulled one back, leaving the Turkish side through 3-2 on aggregate.

It was a result built on genuine quality Fenerbahce’s coaching staff will point to a squad that includes the likes of Romelu Lukaku and Ederson finally delivering a European campaign worthy of the club’s history.

The blow
The trouble started, by most accounts, before the final whistle even sounded. Fenerbahce midfielder Matteo Guendouzi a former Arsenal player who spent two years at Lyon’s fiercest rival, Marseille, between 2022 and 2024 was booed by the home crowd throughout the match. He says he was targeted worse than that: he later told reporters that some 60,000 fans spent the full 90 minutes, and the warm-up before it, insulting his family, without any intervention from match officials to calm the stadium.

Whatever the provocation, Guendouzi’s response after the win escalated things fast. He was filmed raising a middle finger toward the home end, making the “Jul” hand gesture associated with Marseille, and shouting “Allez l’OM” “Go Marseille” directly at Lyon supporters who had just watched their club eliminated. As he was escorted toward the tunnel by teammates including Lukaku and Milan Škriniar, a Lyon goalkeeping coach came out from the tunnel area and aimed a kick at him, triggering a free-for-all involving more than twenty players and staff from both sides, with punches and slaps thrown before security separated the two camps.

Lyon captain Corentin Tolisso was blunt afterward, calling Guendouzi’s celebration irresponsible and urging him to win with more humility. Lyon’s own statement described the closing stages as marked by high tension following what it called a provocative celebration.

Guendouzi, for his part, was unapologetic in the mixed zone, arguing that banter has to run in both directions and that what his family endured for ninety minutes amounted to a real injustice that the officials should have stopped.

What comes next
UEFA is expected to open an investigation into the post-match scenes, and disciplinary action against Guendouzi for both the gestures and his role in the tunnel confrontation looks likely which could cost Fenerbahce his availability for opening fixtures in the league phase they worked so hard to reach. For a club making its return to Europe’s top table after 17 years away, that would be an unwelcome asterisk on what should have been an unambiguous triumph.

The episode is also a reminder of how thin the line still is between the theatre clubs court and the chaos they risk inviting. Guendouzi’s history at Marseille made him a target the moment the draw was made; his decision to lean into that history rather than let the scoreline speak for itself turned a hard-fought aggregate win into a story about fists in a tunnel rather than a historic European return.
