Veteran coach Carlos Queiroz says he is honoured to continue leading Ghana’s national team after agreeing a new deal with the Ghana Football Association (GFA).

The 73-year-old has extended his stay as Black Stars head coach following talks involving the GFA, the Ministry of Sports and Recreation and the Portuguese tactician, whose initial four-month contract expired after the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Queiroz was appointed in March following the dismissal of Otto Addo and oversaw Ghana’s campaign at the tournament in North America, where the four-time African champions reached the knockout stage.

Although the GFA is yet to disclose the length and terms of the new agreement, the decision ensures continuity as Ghana begins preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.

In a statement following the announcement, Queiroz described the opportunity to remain in charge as both a privilege and a responsibility.

“It is with immense pride and honour that I confirm my continuation as Head Coach of the Black Stars of Ghana,” he said.

“Serving Ghana is far more than coaching a football team. It is a privilege, a responsibility and a mission to honour one of Africa’s greatest football nations and its incredible and passionate football people.

“I am proud of what our players, staff and Federation achieved together under challenging circumstances at the 2026 World Cup final competition. Their courage, discipline and commitment restored belief, competitiveness and the pride of a nation.”

The former Egypt coach believes Ghana’s next challenge extends beyond qualification for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, insisting the campaign should serve as a foundation for future success.

“Now, a new chapter begins,” Queiroz added.

“The Africa Cup of Nations is much more than our next destination — it is the golden gateway to building the Black Stars that will shine and proudly compete at the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

“Our ambition is clear: improve every day, unite the nation, make Ghana stronger and fight for every victory with passion, humility and pride.”

Queiroz’s extension follows a World Cup campaign that helped restore confidence around the national team after a difficult period.

Ghana advanced from Group L after defeating Panama, drawing with England and losing narrowly to Croatia before their tournament ended with a 1-0 defeat to Colombia in the Round of 32.

The performance convinced Ghana’s football authorities that the experienced coach should remain at the helm as the team embarks on a rebuilding process aimed at returning the Black Stars to the summit of African football.

His first assignment under the new agreement will be the start of Ghana’s AFCON qualifying campaign later this month.

The Black Stars travel to Bouaké to face Côte d’Ivoire at the Stade de la Paix on 24 September before hosting The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium three days later.

Having failed to qualify for the previous AFCON finals in Morocco, Ghana will be eager to avoid another disappointment and secure a return to Africa’s biggest football tournament.

The GFA will hope that Queiroz’s vast international experience and the progress shown at the World Cup can provide the platform for a successful new era as the Black Stars look to re-establish themselves among the continent’s elite.
