Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta, Chelsea’s Xabi Alonso, Hull City’s Sergej Jakirovic and Manchester City’s Enzo Maresca have been named on the shortlist for the Premier League’s August Manager of the Month award, organisers confirmed on Thursday.

Alonso made an instant impact at Stamford Bridge, guiding Chelsea to two wins from two in his opening month in charge.

His attacking trio of Joao Pedro, Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers combined for five goals and four assists as the Blues thrashed Fulham 3-0 before putting four past Brighton.

Arteta’s Arsenal matched that perfect start, beating Coventry City 3-0 and edging past Aston Villa 1-0. What stood out most was Arsenal’s defensive solidity, with the Gunners yet to concede and limiting opponents to a single shot on target across both games.

Maresca showed his tactical nous at Manchester City despite a shaky start against Bournemouth. Trailing late, he turned to substitute Rayan Cherki, who set up two goals in the final minutes to snatch victory.

City followed that up with a 4-1 demolition of Crystal Palace, with Cherki and Erling Haaland both scoring twice.

Newly promoted Hull City have been the surprise package under Jakirovic, stunning Manchester United on the opening day before grinding out a late win over fellow promoted side Coventry.

Their defence has also yet to concede, with goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis earning a nomination for Player of the Month.
