Amnesty International Demands Probe Into Discovery of 28 Human Skulls in Abia

By Kingsley Ike

Amnesty International Nigeria has formally called on government authorities to launch a comprehensive and transparent investigation following the disturbing recovery of 28 human skulls and skeletal remains in Abia State . The grim discovery was made during a series of coordinated police raids targeting suspected criminal hideouts hidden deep within the forests of Umuaku-Isuochi and Nneato , located in the Umunneochi Local Government Area. The human rights organization emphasized the critical need for a thorough inquiry to identify the victims, determine the circumstances surrounding their deaths, and bring the perpetrators of these heinous acts to justice.

The alarming discovery was initially made public by the Abia State Police Command , which confirmed that its officers uncovered the human remains while dismantling active kidnapping camps in the region. These forest camps have long been suspected of serving as operational bases for syndicates involved in violent crimes, including abduction for ransom and ritual killings. The successful raid marks a significant breakthrough for law enforcement but has simultaneously raised profound public anxiety regarding the scale of insecurity and violent crime plaguing the area.

According to an official briefing by the Abia State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen Chinaka , the massive operation was executed by a joint task force consisting of the Violent Crime Response Unit, Anti-Kidnapping Unit, Anti-Cultism Unit, Intelligence Response Unit, and the Rapid Response Squad , alongside officers from the Isuochi Divisional Police Station. The tactical crackdown was carried out as part of the command’s ongoing, intelligence-led initiative dubbed “Operation No Hideout for Criminal Elements,” which aims to completely flush out criminal syndicates and restore safety across Abia State.

The Abia State Police Command reported that the suspects managed to evade capture and flee into the surrounding wilderness upon sighting the approaching tactical teams. This swift evasion left the criminal hideouts completely deserted, allowing the law enforcement operatives to safely scatter and dismantle the camps. In the wake of the operation, the command confirmed that forensic and investigative processes have been launched to establish the identities of the victims and uncover the precise circumstances surrounding their deaths. Simultaneously, police surveillance has been significantly intensified across the region as coordinated manhunts continue to track down and apprehend the fleeing suspects.

Reacting to these developments in an official statement, Amnesty International Nigeria emphasized that because the recovered remains are widely assumed to belong to victims of kidnapping, the stakes for accountability are incredibly high. The global rights group stressed that this horrific discovery underscores an urgent imperative for the government to ensure a transparent process. They noted that it is entirely necessary for authorities to exhaust all legal and investigative avenues so that the individuals responsible for these atrocities are brought to justice and held fully accountable under the law.

Amnesty International reported that individuals abducted in Nigeria face extreme abuses, including torture, starvation, amputation, rape, and forced participation in atrocities. The organization urged Nigerian authorities to urgently dismantle the kidnapping crisis driven by ransom payments and to involve families of the missing in enhancing ongoing investigations.
