I will listen, engage and work with all stakeholders to deliver as Local Government Minister – Mahama Ayariga

TUE, 01 SEP 2026

Newly sworn-in Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, has pledged to work with key stakeholders to improve local governance and development across the country.

Ayariga was sworn into office by President John Dramani Mahama at Jubilee House on Saturday, August 29, 2026, after his nomination was approved by Parliament.

He said his priority would be to ensure that local government institutions become more responsive and accountable to the communities they serve.

The Bawku Central MP also pledged to strengthen collaboration with traditional authorities and religious institutions to promote national cohesion, peace and development.

In a social media post on Tuesday, September 1, the Minister said he would approach the new assignment with humility and a strong sense of duty.

“I approach this assignment with humility and a strong sense of duty. My commitment is to listen, engage, and work with all stakeholders to deliver practical solutions that improve the lives of our people,” he said.

He said the role comes with significant expectations, particularly in bringing development closer to citizens and strengthening Ghana’s decentralisation system.

The Minister said he would focus on ensuring that Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) are responsive to the needs of their respective communities.

He also acknowledged the important role of traditional authorities and religious institutions in promoting peace and national development.

Ayariga said he would be guided by principles of integrity, fairness, accountability and service to the national interest as he begins his tenure.

“The responsibility is great, but I am confident that with God’s guidance, the support of the president, and the collective efforts of all stakeholders, we can make meaningful progress,” he stated.
