The proposed garment factory in Cape Coast is expected to create new employment for young people in the Central Region as government intensifies efforts to expand Ghana’s garment and textile manufacturing industry.

The project forms part of President Mahama’s commitment to establish garment factories in the Central, Eastern and Bono regions to promote local manufacturing, create jobs and stimulate economic activity across the country.

The Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Mrs Elizabeth Ofosu Adjare, said the project would provide an important opportunity for residents, particularly young people, to access employment within their own communities.

She made the remarks on Monday when accompanied by the Chief Director and officials from the Ministry, inspected the proposed site for the Cape Coast garment factory.

She expressed satisfaction with the proposed factory location, particularly its accessibility and proximity to road networks.

“We are happy with the location because it is accessible and close to the road network, so it will be easier for workers to commute to and from the factory,” she said.

She said the chiefs and people of the area had made land available for the project and had already commenced preparatory works, including excavation.

“The chiefs and people have made the land available, and they have already started some of the preparatory works, including excavation,” she said.

According to the Minister, the site could be ready within one to two months, subject to the completion of the ongoing preparatory activities.

She said the enthusiasm of the local community towards the project was encouraging and demonstrated the importance residents attached to the employment opportunities it could generate.

“Garment factories create jobs,” she said, stressing that the government was looking at the garment and textile industry as an avenue for employment while increasing domestic production.

Mrs Ofosu Adjare cited the recently commissioned Northshore Apparel Hub in Savelugu as an example of the potential of the garment industry to generate large-scale employment.

The facility, commissioned on August 28, 2026, is expected to create about 3,000 jobs in its first phase, with employment projected to reach 10,000 when fully operational.

“Look at what is happening in Savelugu. The Northshore Apparel Hub alone is expected to create about 3,000 jobs in the first phase and up to 10,000 jobs when it is fully operational,” she said.

She said the government wanted young people in other parts of the country to benefit from similar opportunities.

“We want to see these opportunities extended to other parts of the country, including Cape Coast, so that our young people can find decent jobs and contribute to the economy,” she said.

The Savelugu facility is also expected to support Ghana’s export ambitions, with its management preparing to begin international shipments.

The minister said the project demonstrated how the garment industry could contribute to the government’s 24-Hour Economy initiative by increasing production and creating additional employment through multiple shifts.

She, however, explained that the establishment of government-supported industrial projects involved several stages, including feasibility studies, procurement processes and technical assessments.

“Anytime you are doing a government project, you go through a process,” she said.

She noted that transaction advisors were also working on the various proposed garment projects, adding that construction could commence once the necessary processes had been completed.

“We have transaction advisors working on these projects, and once we finish all the processes, we will be able to move to the construction stage,” she said.

Mrs Ofosu Adjare assured the chiefs and people of Cape Coast that they would be kept informed about developments concerning the project.

“Once the processes are concluded and we have a definitive timeline, we will come back and inform the chiefs and people so that everybody will know what is happening,” she said.
