The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has responded to a claim by his former running mate, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, that he cannot deliver the transformation Nigeria needs if elected president in 2027.

Baba-Ahmed, who was Obi’s running mate on the Labour Party ticket in the 2023 presidential election, had declared that none of the major opposition figures seeking to unseat President Bola Tinubu could fundamentally change the country.

Asked specifically whether his assessment included Obi, Baba-Ahmed replied: “Including Peter Obi.”

However, Obi has dismissed the assessment, directing attention to his record as governor of Anambra State as evidence of his capacity to deliver reforms and development.

The former Anambra governor spoke during an interview with Arise TV’s Ojinika Okpe.

Responding to Baba-Ahmed’s criticism, Obi said he would rather allow his performance in Anambra State to speak for his ability to govern at the national level.

According to him, his administration in the state recorded improvements in critical areas of development, which he said could be replicated across Nigeria if he became president.

“Well, I can only use an example of where I passed through. I passed through Anambra State and I improved the state, in critical areas of development. And I can do the same thing in Nigeria,” Obi said.

He further outlined his priorities for the country, promising to restore civility and order in governance while reducing the cost of running government.

Obi described the current cost of governance as excessive and irresponsible, arguing that a government focused on efficiency could redirect resources towards national development.

“I’m definitely sure that if given the opportunities, first I’ll bring civility and order and governance. I’ll be able to cut the cost of governance, which is irresponsible today. I’ll be able to do quite a number of things that will bring honour, respect to the country,” he said.
