Argentine icon Lionel Messi and Barcelona sensation Lamine Yamal headline this year’s race for football’s most prestigious individual honour, with both stars confirmed among 30 nominees for the 2026 Ballon d’Or.

France Football announced the shortlist across its official social media platforms on Tuesday, kicking off weeks of anticipation ahead of the ceremony.

For Messi, now 39 and plying his trade with Inter Miami, this marks his 17th career nomination, an extraordinary tally that underscores his lasting influence on the sport.

The Argentine, who stepped away from international football in August, already boasts a remarkable trophy cabinet featuring wins in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2019, 2021 and 2023.

Yamal, still just 19, picked up his third consecutive nomination on the back of an outstanding year that saw him help Spain lift the World Cup while also contributing to Barcelona’s domestic league triumph and Super Cup success.

His numbers in front of goal and in creating chances for teammates place him firmly among the sport’s brightest young talents.

The full nominee list features a mix of established stars and rising names, including Kylian Mbappé, Erling Haaland, Vinícius Jr., Jude Bellingham, Ousmane Dembélé, and Harry Kane, among others, with performances assessed across the 2025-26 campaign, including the World Cup itself.

Notably, this year’s ceremony breaks tradition by moving outside Paris for the first time, set to take place in London on October 26 as part of celebrations marking the award’s 70th anniversary and honouring its first-ever recipient, Stanley Matthews.
