President John Dramani Mahama has arrived in Luanda, Angola, to participate in the 21st Extraordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union.

The summit is focused on strengthening conflict prevention and resolution mechanisms across the African continent.

A statement issued by the Presidency said the high-level meeting, scheduled for August 30, would be led by President João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço of Angola, who is also the AU Champion for Peace and Reconciliation in Africa.

According to the statement, the summit’s main agenda is to consider and adopt a comprehensive Decision, Action Plan and Implementation Matrix on conflict prevention and resolution across the continent.

The statement noted that African leaders would assess existing continental peace and security frameworks and agree on concrete measures to improve coordination, responsiveness, implementation and financing under the African Peace and Security Architecture and the African Governance Architecture.

It said the gathering was taking place against the backdrop of complex and growing security challenges in several parts of Africa, including Sudan, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the Sahel region, the Horn of Africa and Mozambique.

The statement added that President Mahama and other African leaders were expected to develop actionable strategies to enhance regional stability and strengthen the continent’s collective capacity for peacebuilding and conflict resolution.
