Ghana captain Jordan Ayew is expected to be included in the Black Stars squad for this month’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

The 34-year-old, who led Ghana at the 2026 World Cup in North America, is currently without a club after leaving Leicester City following their relegation to League One.

Ayew made 42 Championship appearances for Leicester during the 2025-26 season, scoring six goals and providing three assists. He started 24 league matches.

The forward has been linked with a move to Cyprus side APOEL Nicosia and English Championship club Blackburn Rovers, although both clubs have denied having an interest in signing him.

Ayew is now reportedly expected to join Championship side Sheffield United as a free agent, and he is expected to be unveiled on Friday, September 11, when he turns 35.

The former Aston Villa and Swansea City forward has more than a decade of experience playing in England. He previously represented Crystal Palace in the Premier League after beginning his European career with French club Marseille.

If his move to Sheffield United is completed, Ayew is expected to return to the Black Stars squad for their opening AFCON qualifying fixtures this month.

Ghana will travel to Bouaké to face Côte d’Ivoire at the Stade de la Paix on 24 September before hosting The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium three days later.

The Black Stars missed out on qualification for the previous AFCON tournament in Morocco and will be aiming to secure an immediate return to Africa’s premier international competition.
