D’Tigers’ hopes of securing a place at the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup suffered another setback after Nigeria fell to an 82-79 defeat against South Sudan in Tunisia on Friday.

The Nigerian team entered the game looking to recover from its opening loss to Cameroon but was unable to avoid another disappointing result.

South Sudan established control early, ending the first quarter with a 30-19 advantage after producing a strong scoring run.

Nigeria gradually found its rhythm and mounted a comeback in the second quarter. Caleb Agada played an important role as D’Tigers overturned a seven-point deficit and moved ahead 48-43 early in the third period.

The lead, however, did not last. South Sudan responded strongly and kept the contest close before taking control during the decisive stages.

Nigeria remained within touching distance in the final quarter, with Josh Okogie hitting a three-pointer to bring the scores level at 70-70 with just over seven minutes remaining.

South Sudan quickly responded and managed to protect its advantage until the final buzzer.

Marial Shayok was instrumental for the Bright Stars, finishing with 19 points, while Carlik Jones recorded 11 points, 12 assists and eight rebounds.

Okogie led Nigeria’s scoring with 14 points and eight rebounds, but his contribution could not prevent another defeat.

Having now lost to Cameroon and South Sudan, D’Tigers face a crucial encounter with Cape Verde on Sunday as they attempt to revive their World Cup qualification hopes.
