Carlos Queiroz is set to continue as head coach of Ghana’s Black Stars, with the Portuguese tactician reportedly close to agreeing a new contract with the Ghana Football Association (GFA).

The 73-year-old is expected to extend his stay after leading Ghana to the knockout phase of the 2026 Fifa World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Queiroz was initially handed a short-term four-month contract after being appointed in April following the dismissal of Otto Addo in March.

The veteran coach’s future had remained uncertain, with his initial agreement covering Ghana’s World Cup campaign. However, negotiations over a new deal have now advanced significantly following the settlement of outstanding payments owed to Queiroz and members of his technical team.

The outstanding financial obligations, relating to their World Cup contracts, were settled by the GFA with support from the Ministry of Sports.

The resolution of the payments is understood to have removed a major obstacle in discussions between Queiroz and the GFA, with both parties now expected to finalise the terms of a new agreement.

Queiroz’s continued appointment would provide Ghana with stability as the Black Stars prepare for their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.

Ghana are scheduled to begin their qualifying campaign away against Ivory Coast on 24 September 2026 at the Stade de la Paix in Bouaké.

They will then return home three days later to face The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium.

The Black Stars are aiming to qualify for the next Africa Cup of Nations after failing to reach the previous edition, which was hosted by Morocco.

Queiroz, who has previously managed Egypt and Colombia, took charge of Ghana at a crucial stage of their preparations for the World Cup and guided the team into the knockout phase.

His expected new deal would see him oversee the Black Stars’ efforts to secure a return to the continental showpiece, while also working on building on Ghana’s World Cup progress.
