Charlton Athletic have confirmed that goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo has received an invitation to join Nigeria’s squad for the upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches.

The 24-year-old is expected to link up with the Super Eagles ahead of their opening qualifiers against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau as Nigeria begins its campaign to secure a place at the continental tournament.

Okonkwo is currently playing for Charlton Athletic on loan from Wrexham and has featured regularly for the English club this season. He has made four appearances so far, giving him valuable competitive action ahead of the international fixtures.

The goalkeeper has already represented Nigeria at senior level, earning two caps since making his debut during the Unity Cup at The Valley in May.

The upcoming qualifiers could provide him with another opportunity to establish himself within the national team setup.

Okonkwo is expected to face competition for the starting position from established goalkeepers Stanley Nwabali and Maduka Okoye.

His recent performances at club level could strengthen his case for more playing time with the Super Eagles.

Nigeria will begin the qualifying campaign at home against Madagascar on Friday, September 25, with the match scheduled to take place at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.

Four days later, the Super Eagles will travel to face Guinea-Bissau. The two matches will be important for Eric Chelle’s side as they look to make a strong start to their qualification campaign.
