Yul Edochie Sparks Outrage by Branding Igbo Critics of President Tinubu as Monkeys in Nigeria

The political landscape in Nigeria has been set ablaze following inflammatory remarks by Nollywood actor and politician Yul Edochie, who launched a scathing verbal assault on members of the Igbo community. Taking to the social media platform X, Edochie lambasted those who criticize fellow Igbos for supporting President Bola Tinubu’s political agenda, labeling such detractors as “monkeys and cowards.”
Edochie’s outburst centers on what he perceives as a hypocritical double standard within the South-East region. He challenged critics to show evidence of them confronting individuals from the Northern or Western regions who share the same political leanings. By highlighting that Northern celebrities and Yoruba citizens support the President without facing similar internal backlash, Edochie argued that the targeted harassment of Igbo supporters is both short-sighted and discriminatory.
“Show me a video of you dragging Yorubas who are supporting Tinubu,” Edochie demanded. “Show me a video of you dragging all the past leaders who couldn’t fix Nigeria. None.”
This controversy follows a period of heightened tension between political factions in the South-East. Recently, prominent Catholic priest Chibuzo Obimma, widely known as Ebube Muonso, publicly ridiculed Igbo members of the “City Boy Movement,” dismissing them as “city fools” who prioritize immediate personal gain over the long-term interests of the region.
The divide comes at a critical time as the Tinubu administration’s mobilization efforts gain momentum across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones. High-profile figures, including billionaire businessman Obi Cubana, have already stepped into leadership roles for the campaign in the South-East, signaling a deepening rift between traditional regional sentiments and modern political realignments. As Edochie doubles down on his stance, the debate over loyalty and political freedom continues to polarize the Nigerian public.
