Vice President Kashim Shettima has departed Abuja for Luanda, Angola, to represent President Bola Tinubu at the 21st Extraordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union.

Shettima’s trip comes as African leaders gather in the Angolan capital for high-level deliberations on conflict prevention, resolution and strategies for achieving sustainable peace and stability across the continent.

According to a statement issued on Saturday by the Vice President’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Communications, Stanley Nkwocha, the summit will focus on practical approaches to addressing Africa’s persistent security and conflict challenges.

The Vice President is expected to participate in discussions with other African leaders and key stakeholders on strengthening continental mechanisms for preventing conflicts, managing disputes and consolidating peace.

Nigeria is expected to use the platform to reiterate its longstanding role in peacebuilding and conflict resolution across Africa while contributing to efforts aimed at improving the continent’s collective response to security threats.

Shettima, who is travelling with senior defence and security officials, will also deliver Tinubu’s address at the summit.

In the address, he is expected to present Nigeria’s position on the issues before the gathering and reaffirm the Federal Government’s commitment to promoting peace, stability and security across the continent.

The Vice President is scheduled to return to Nigeria after concluding his engagements in Angola.
