US Labels Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood as Terrorist Group

The United States government has officially designated the Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood (SMB) as a global terrorist entity. This decision follows accusations from the Department of State that the group has played a central role in the ongoing violence and instability within Sudan.

According to an official statement released on Monday, the designation covers both the Sudanese Islamic Movement and its armed faction, the al Baraa Bin Malik Brigade (BBMB). The State Department intends to further list the SMB as a Foreign Terrorist Organization, citing its use of extreme violence against civilians to promote a radical Islamist ideology and obstruct peace efforts.

Officials report that the SMB has contributed approximately 20,000 fighters to the Sudanese conflict. The group is also accused of receiving tactical training and direct support from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Investigative reports linked to the designation highlight a pattern of mass executions and targeted killings based on the race or ethnicity of individuals in captured territories.

This move follows earlier actions by the US Department of the Treasury, which blacklisted the al Baraa Bin Malik Brigade in September 2025. Federal authorities state that these designations are designed to isolate the group by denying it access to the American financial system and critical resources.

Under the new sanctions, any property or financial interests belonging to the Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood within the United States are frozen. Furthermore, American citizens and entities are strictly prohibited from engaging in any business transactions with the group. The US government warned that any international parties found dealing with the SMB could face secondary sanctions under counterterrorism laws.

The new status for the SMB will be legally finalized once it is published in the Federal Register. The State Department noted that any group seeking removal from the Specially Designated Nationals and Blocked Persons List must follow official delisting procedures through the designated government channels.
