Three siblings from the same family have drowned after a boat conveying them capsized at Tiga Dam in Tudunwada Local Government Area of Kano State.

The incident occurred at about 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, according to information provided by relatives of the victims.

The deceased were identified as Murjanatu, Atikatu and Bilkisu, popularly known as Amira. They were all residents of Yalwan Rugu-Rugu community in the local government area.

Confirming the incident, the Chairman of Tudunwada Local Government Area and Chairperson of the Association of Local Government Chairmen of Nigeria (ALGON), Kano State chapter, Hajiya Sa’adatu Salisu Soja, expressed condolences to the bereaved family and the affected community.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and the people of Yalwan Rugu-Rugu over this painful incident,” she said.

Salisu Soja also prayed for the repose of the victims’ souls and for strength for their families to cope with the loss.

“May Allah forgive them, have mercy on them and grant their families the strength to bear this irreparable loss,” she added.

The circumstances surrounding the capsizing were not immediately clear as of the time of filing this report.

There was also no official statement from the Kano State Police Command or the Kano State Fire Service, which is responsible for emergency rescue operations, on the incident.

The latest tragedy comes amid renewed concerns over the safety of inland water transportation in northern Nigeria.

On August 21, a separate boat accident in Sokoto State claimed at least 52 lives after an overloaded vessel capsized, with children reportedly accounting for a large proportion of the victims.

Officials said the Sokoto accident involved mostly children between the ages of 10 and 15. The National Inland Waterways Authority had earlier reported recovering the bodies of at least 40 children, while emergency authorities continued efforts to establish the exact number of passengers involved.

The recurring boat accidents have heightened concerns over passenger safety, vessel overloading and emergency response capacity on Nigeria’s inland waterways.
