Sultan Of Sokoto Reacts As Sani Emerges New Emir Of Gumel

The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has congratulated Lawan Ahmed Muhammad Sani on his emergence as the new Emir of Gumel, describing the development as a testament to the enduring relevance of the traditional institution.
The Sultan, who is also President of the Northern Traditional Rulers Council, said the peaceful, orderly and timely selection of the new Sarkin Gumel demonstrated the strength and stability of the traditional system.
Sani emerged as successor to the late Emir of Gumel, Alhaji (Dr.) Ahmed Muhammad Sani II, who died in Cairo, Egypt, on Thursday, September 3, 2026, after 46 years on the throne.
In a statement issued on Sunday by Prince Bashir Adefaka, the Sultan congratulated the new Emir and urged him to uphold the traditions, dignity and values of the ancient Gumel Emirate.
He also charged the new monarch to build on the legacy of his predecessor while promoting peace, justice, unity and development across the emirate.
The Sultan urged the new Emir to maintain cordial relationships with neighbouring emirates, government authorities and communities within and outside Gumel Emirate.
He stressed that traditional rulers have an important role to play in sustaining peace, stability and social cohesion, particularly amid growing demands for responsible leadership at the community level.
“The traditional institution remains a vital pillar of peace, stability and social cohesion, particularly at a time when communities require responsible and purposeful leadership,” the statement quoted the Sultan as saying.
Abubakar further called on residents of the emirate to give the new Emir their full support and cooperation, noting that the effectiveness of traditional leadership depends largely on the unity and loyalty of the people.
He prayed for divine wisdom, strength and guidance for the new monarch as he assumes the responsibilities of the throne.
The Sultan also prayed for the repose of the soul of the late Emir, asking Allah to reward him for his 46 years of service to the people of Gumel and grant him Aljannatul Firdaus.
He wished the new Sarkin Gumel a long, peaceful and successful reign in the service of his people, the traditional institution and humanity.
