Newcastle United were beaten by Strasbourg on penalties after the two teams played out a 1-1 draw in an entertaining pre-season friendly.

Newcastle took the lead in the 38th minute when Will Osula finished a move created by Jacob Murphy.

The advantage gave the Premier League side some control, but Strasbourg remained competitive and continued to threaten.

The French side eventually found an equaliser in the 69th minute through Gessime Yassine, setting up a tense finish.

Neither team could find a winning goal before the final whistle, despite several opportunities in the closing stages.

With the match level, the contest was decided by a penalty shootout. Strasbourg held their nerve to prevail 3-2, securing victory after Newcastle failed to convert enough of their spot-kicks.

The match statistics showed how closely contested the encounter was. Strasbourg had a slight edge in possession at 51 per cent, while Newcastle recorded 49 per cent.

The visitors also registered 19 shots compared with Newcastle’s 15 and won seven corners to Newcastle’s five.

Both managers used the fixture to give their squads valuable playing time, with numerous substitutions made throughout the second half.

Newcastle introduced several players, including Gio Reyna, Sean Neave and Rory Finneran, while Strasbourg also made multiple changes as the game progressed.

For Newcastle, the result provides another useful test ahead of the new season, particularly with several squad players receiving opportunities.

Strasbourg, meanwhile, can take confidence from holding their English opponents to a draw before producing a composed performance in the shootout.
