SSANU Rejects ‘Fake Agreement’ with Nigerian Government, Threatens Indefinite Strike

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has dismissed rumors of a finalized wage agreement with the Bola Tinubu administration. The union warned it will embark on a total and indefinite strike if ongoing negotiations are not concluded by April 30.
Ongoing Negotiations and “Fake” Claims
Following a recent Special National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Abuja, SSANU clarified that talks are still active. Despite holding seven meetings with government representatives since October 2024, no final deal has been reached.
The union strongly condemned a circulating letter that falsely claimed presidential approval for a 30% allowance increase. SSANU described the document as a “rude shock” and a clear violation of collective bargaining principles, expressing concern over deliberate attempts to mislead the public.
Strike Ultimatum
SSANU President Mohammed Ibrahim emphasized that the union will reject any outcome that falls short of their ongoing discussions. Operating under the Joint Action Committee (JAC) alongside the Non-Academic Staff Union, SSANU maintains its firm end-of-April deadline for the federal government to finalize talks.
If the deadline is not met, the union plans to mobilize its members to withdraw all services. Ibrahim highlighted that a strike would paralyze universities, halting the essential administrative, healthcare, and security functions handled by non-teaching staff.
In the meantime, union leadership has urged members to remain calm, united, and vigilant as they continue to advocate for fair compensation, due process, and workers’ rights.
