Senegal Stuns England in Historic 3-1 Victory

Nottingham, UK – The Lions of Teranga have made history, becoming the first African nation to defeat England in a men’s senior international football match. Senegal triumphed with a decisive 3-1 victory in a friendly at the City Ground on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, marking a significant milestone for African football and a sobering moment for England.
The historic win for Senegal brought an end to England’s unbeaten record against African opposition, which had spanned 21 matches. For England’s new manager, Thomas Tuchel, it was his first defeat since taking the helm.
England initially took the lead in the 7th minute with a goal from captain Harry Kane. However, Senegal responded before halftime, with Ismaïla Sarr finding the net in the 40th minute to level the score.
The second half saw Senegal’s momentum continue to build. Habib Diarra gave the visitors the lead in the 62nd minute. The victory was sealed in stoppage time when Cheikh Sabaly scored Senegal’s third goal, capping off a remarkable performance.
The match was a tale of contrasting performances. While Senegal played with what was described as “freedom, enjoyment and a bit of quality,” England appeared disjointed and struggled to find their rhythm. A late potential equalizer from Jude Bellingham was disallowed for handball following a VAR review.
The result has been met with widespread celebration in Senegal and across the African continent. For England, the loss has raised questions and prompted criticism just a year before the World Cup.
