Paris Saint-Germain retained the UEFA Super Cup after defeating Aston Villa 2-1 in a closely contested final at the Red Bull Arena in Salzburg.

PSG took control early when Khvicha Kvaratskhelia opened the scoring in the 20th minute with a powerful finish. Villa responded just before the break, with 17-year-old Brian Madjo volleying home a cross from captain John McGinn to level the contest.

Madjo’s goal was particularly memorable as it made him the youngest player to score in the history of the Super Cup.

The teenager was making his competitive debut for Villa after the club successfully appealed a FIFA registration ban that had prevented him from playing since his January move from Metz.

The second half remained competitive, but PSG eventually found the breakthrough. Désiré Doué put the French champions back in front in the 61st minute, with the goal surviving a VAR review for a possible offside.

Villa pushed for another equaliser but could not find a way past the PSG defence.

Goalkeeper Matvey Safonov was also called upon to make important saves as the Europa League winners searched for a second goal.

The victory gives PSG consecutive Super Cup triumphs, following their success over Tottenham in the previous edition.

For Villa manager Unai Emery, however, the defeat extends his difficult record in the competition, having now lost all four of his Super Cup finals.

Despite the setback, Villa can take encouragement from their performance against the European champions as they prepare for the new Premier League campaign.
