More than 4 million pieces of fake, unregistered or non-compliant baby diapers have been confiscated across Ghana as part of a nationwide market surveillance exercise by the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) and the Consumer Protection Agency (CPA).

The operation is targeting unregistered and unbranded baby diapers being sold on the Ghanaian market, with authorities stepping up efforts to protect children and consumers from potentially unsafe baby-care products.

Nana Prempeh Okogyeabour Aduhene, Executive Director in charge of Mediation and Arbitration at the Consumer Protection Agency, disclosed the figure and said the seizures formed part of a nationwide campaign to remove products that fail to meet regulatory requirements.

The exercise follows growing concerns over the distribution and sale of baby-care products without the necessary registration, proper labelling and evidence of compliance with established safety standards.

Western Region Operation
The latest phase of the surveillance exercise covered parts of the Western Region, including Takoradi and Tarkwa, where teams inspected shops and business premises and confiscated diapers considered non-compliant.

The operation began in the Western Region on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, with surveillance teams conducting inspections in Takoradi and surrounding areas before moving to Tarkwa.

According to the CPA, the exercise resulted in the seizure of several quantities of unregistered and unbranded diapers, including Softcare diapers and other assorted unbranded products.

In Takoradi, seizures were made at Kadiesoa Mothercare, Akosua Ventures, El-Vitessa Enterprise, Diaper House, R. Boys Everyday Needs, Kari-J Essentials and King C Ventures.

Kadiesoa Mothercare had 16 packs of unregistered Softcare diapers confiscated, while 48 packs of assorted unbranded diapers were seized from Akosua Ventures. El-Vitessa Enterprise also had 180 packs confiscated.

At Diaper House, the team seized one bale of assorted unbranded diapers and 29 packs of unregistered Softcare diapers. R. Boys Everyday Needs had 29 packs of unbranded diapers confiscated, while 74 packs of assorted unbranded diapers were seized from Kari-J Essentials.

King C Ventures also had 11 packs of unregistered Softcare diapers confiscated.

The operation was later extended to Koma Oyie Enterprise in Takoradi and a number of businesses in Tarkwa, including Clevid Enterprise, Claxvis, Gladys Kwofie Anum Ventures and Brecom Enterprise.

In Tarkwa, the team confiscated 16 packs of assorted unbranded diapers from Clevid Enterprise, 14 packs of unregistered Softcare diapers from Claxvis and 15 packs from Gladys Kwofie Anum Ventures.

Another 80 packs of unbranded diapers were seized from Brecom Enterprise.

Nationwide Surveillance
The broader surveillance campaign has been ongoing since the beginning of the year, with the FDA and CPA carrying out similar operations in various parts of the country.

The agencies are expected to extend the exercise to the Bono Region and other parts of Ghana yet to be covered as they intensify efforts to identify and remove unregistered baby diapers from the market.

The campaign is expected to continue through the end of the year, with authorities warning businesses against stocking or selling baby-care products that fail to meet Ghana’s regulatory requirements.
