The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) has announced the death of its University Bursar, Mallam Nasiru Gusau Marafa, who was reportedly shot while returning from Gusau, Zamfara State.

Marafa was killed on Sunday, September 6, 2026, in an incident whose circumstances remain unclear.

The university confirmed his death in a notice signed by its Registrar and Secretary to Council, Oladipo Adetayo Ajayi.

According to the statement, information available to the institution indicated that the bursar was shot while travelling from Gusau.

“According to information available to the University, Mallam Nasiru Gusau Marafa was reportedly shot while returning from Gusau,” the notice stated.

NOUN did not disclose the location of the shooting, the circumstances surrounding the attack or the identity of those responsible.

Marafa was described by the university as a committed administrator who served meritoriously and occupied several positions of responsibility during his career.

The institution said he was appointed its Bursar in September 2026.

Mourning the deceased, NOUN described his death as a “profound loss” to the university community, portraying him as a distinguished colleague, dedicated administrator and valued member of the institution.

“The entire University community mourns the passing of a distinguished colleague, dedicated administrator and valued member of the NOUN family,” the statement added.

The university expressed condolences to Marafa’s immediate family, relatives, friends and colleagues, while praying for strength for them to cope with the loss.

NOUN said details of his burial would be communicated after arrangements were made by the family.

The university also prayed for the forgiveness of his shortcomings and for Allah to grant him Al-Jannah Firdaus.
