Napoli have confirmed that Scotland international Scott McTominay will need to undergo a heart-related medical procedure, ruling him out of action until after this month’s international break.

The club revealed on Tuesday that the 29-year-old, who previously spent years at Manchester United, has been diagnosed with a mild form of arrhythmia.

While the condition is not regarded as dangerous, doctors have advised that it still needs to be corrected through surgery.

According to a statement released by Napoli, McTominay will undergo a procedure known as pulsed field ablation within the coming days as a way of addressing the irregular heart rhythm.

The club expressed confidence that he would be back in contention for selection once the international break has concluded.

The timing of the injury is unfortunate for both club and country. On the domestic and continental front, Napoli will be without their midfielder for next week’s Champions League showdown against reigning Premier League champions Arsenal, a fixture that would have represented one of the season’s early highlights.

Scotland will also feel the impact of his absence, as McTominay is set to sit out a busy run of Nations League commitments, including back-to-back meetings with Slovenia as well as matches against Switzerland and North Macedonia.

Despite the setback, the tone from Napoli’s statement suggested there is no long-term concern over his health, with the club framing the procedure as a precautionary step rather than a serious medical scare, and expressing optimism that McTominay would return to full training and competitive action shortly after the international window closes.
