Several Nigerian Army personnel were injured on Thursday morning after a military patrol truck crashed along the Ohafia Road in Abia State during a heavy downpour.

The accident occurred as the vehicle was descending a sloped section of the highway, with eyewitnesses attributing the crash to the slippery condition of the road.

The patrol truck reportedly skidded on the rain-soaked asphalt while travelling at considerable speed before losing control and veering towards the road shoulder.

Videos circulating on social media showed the aftermath of the accident, with red mud washed down from nearby hills covering portions of the highway.

Civilians, commercial motorcyclists and passengers of passing vehicles reportedly stopped to assist the injured soldiers and help with the rescue operation.

Some of the injured personnel, visibly shaken and covered in mud, were carried into civilian vehicles and public transport buses for onward transportation to medical facilities.

In one of the vehicles used in the rescue operation, commuters were seen attending to a soldier lying on the floor while he tended to his injuries and removed his mud-clogged combat boots.

Another armed soldier, who appeared to have escaped injury, remained near the crash scene and assisted in coordinating the recovery efforts with civilians.

The condition of the injured soldiers and the extent of damage to the military vehicle had yet to be officially disclosed at the time of filing this report.
