Former presidential media aide to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, Bashir Ahmad, has claimed that former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso may be regretting his decision to join the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

Ahmad made the remark amid fresh political realignments in Kano, where members of the political camp associated with former Kano State Deputy Governor, Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, have signalled their support for Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and his deputy, Murtala Sule Garo, ahead of their anticipated defection from the NDC to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Reacting to the development, Ahmad said Kwankwaso’s political influence in Kano appeared to be under pressure following his alignment with the opposition coalition.

“Sen. Kwankwaso must be regretting his decision to join the NDC. The move appears to be costing him the political ground he once firmly held in Kano,” he wrote in a post made on X on Wednesday.

Kwankwaso is currently the NDC vice-presidential candidate for the 2027 presidential election. He joined the party defecting from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP).

The latest development followed a solidarity visit by a delegation loyal to Gawuna to Governor Yusuf and his deputy in Kano.

The visit was disclosed in a statement issued on Tuesday by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.

The delegation was led by a close ally of Gawuna, Muhammad Badaru Umar, and included the NDC Vice Chairman in Kano State, Ali Datti Yako; Mansur Isa Gawuna; Uba Tanko Mijinyawa, popularly known as Uba Danzainab; Aminu Umar Faruk; Sani Jibrin; Salisu Muhammad; Musa Sani Indabo; Muhammad Kabir Bala; Hassan Abba Abdullahi; and Abdurrahman Muhammad.

Speaking during the visit, Badaru said the delegation’s decision to meet the governor was motivated by its commitment to the development and progress of Kano State.

He said the engagement formed part of consultations aimed at contributing to the state’s development.

Yako, another member of the delegation, said residents of Kano were aware of the efforts being made by Governor Yusuf to transform the state.

“Everyone knows that Governor Yusuf is working tirelessly to transform Kano State,” he said.

The development is coming against the backdrop of intensified political manoeuvring in Kano ahead of the 2027 general elections, with politicians and party blocs reassessing their alliances.

The anticipated movement of members of Gawuna’s political structure towards the APC could strengthen the ruling party’s position in Kano and further alter the balance of power ahead of the 2027 elections.

The delegation also reaffirmed its support for Governor Yusuf and his deputy, stressing its interest in the continued development of Kano State.
