The organisers of the Headies Awards have responded to recent criticism from Afro-fusion gospel artiste Gaise Baba, who accused the platform of sidelining faith-based music.

In a detailed statement shared on Instagram, the Headies clarified its history of recognising gospel and inspirational artists, pointing to past winners and the introduction of a dedicated category.

The Nigerian Voice recalls that Gaise Baba recently called out the Headies over the treatment of gospel music, questioning why faith-based songs are often confined to inspirational categories rather than being considered for mainstream awards.

In response, the Headies noted that artists like Lara George, Kefee, Nikki Laoye, and Timi Dakolo have won major general categories in the past. The organisers also explained that the Best Inspirational Single category, introduced in 2022, was created to provide more opportunities for gospel artists, not to exclude them.

Addressing concerns about categories not being presented on stage, the Headies stated that with 35 categories now, a rotation system is used to manage time during the live broadcast. The organisers emphasised that the Inspirational category is part of that rotation and not a sign of disregard.
