The 2026/27 Ghana Premier League season will kick off with local coaches firmly at the forefront of the country’s top-flight clubs, with 13 of the 18 teams placing their faith in Ghanaian managerial talent.

The figures mean that 72.2% of Premier League clubs will be led by Ghanaian coaches this season, while only five teams have opted for foreign coaches.

Among the most experienced local tacticians are Medeama SC’s Ibrahim Tanko, Swedru All Blacks coach Kobina Amissah, Berekum Chelsea’s Kwaku Danso, Aduana FC boss Samuel Boadu and FC Ashantigold 04 head coach Abdul-Karim Zito.

They are joined by Abdulai Gazale of Basake Holy Stars, Christopher Annin of Port City FC, Nana Kwaku Agyemang of FC Samartex, Nurudeen Amadu of Karela United, Mohammed Bashar Ogba of Bechem United, Abdul Henan of Young Apostles, Isaac Nii Armah of Debibi United and Winfred Dormon of Dreams FC.

Despite the strong local presence, five clubs have turned to foreign expertise in a bid to challenge for honours.

Defending champions Bibiani Gold Stars will be led by Greek coach Petros Koukouras, while South African Eric Tinkler begins his first full league campaign in charge of Asante Kotoko.

Hearts of Oak have appointed Bosnian coach Nebojša Kapor, Vision FC will be guided by Montenegrin trainer Predrag Jeredić, and Turkish coach Kasım Gökyıldız remains at the helm of Heart of Lions.

The dominance of Ghanaian coaches reflects a growing confidence in the country’s homegrown technical talent, with clubs increasingly entrusting local managers to deliver results and develop players.

As the new campaign gets underway, the league will offer another platform for Ghanaian coaches to showcase their tactical expertise and ability to compete at the highest level, while the foreign coaches face the challenge of translating their international experience into success in Ghana’s domestic game.
