The five-match tie takes place on 18 and 19 September in Quebec as part of the qualifying campaign for the eight-nation Davis Cup Finals in Bologna in Italy in November.

“Playing for France would be an honour,” said Gea who lost his last-16 match against Botic van de Zandschulp in five sets after squandering a match point during the third set.

In the fourth set, Gea served for the match at 5-4 up against the 30-year-old Dutchman but failed to exploit his opportunity.

Van de Zandschulp claimed the encounter after five hours and 13 minutes.

“I don’t think it would be too soon because I was the last French player left at the US Open,” said Gea who was among 12 Frenchmen in the main draw.

“I’ve been performing really well on the hard courts for a while now so I don’t think it would be too soon.”

Gea, 21, went into the US Open qualifying tournament ranked 87th in the world following a run to his first title on the ATP circuit at Los Cabos in Mexico where he saw off seasoned operators such as Francisco Cerundolo and then Denis Shapovalov to claim the crown.

US Open qualifying campaign

During the US Open qualifiers, Gea beat Simit Nagal from India in the opening round on 25 August. A day later, he dispatched Clement Chidekh from the United States.

But on 28 August, Gea went down in straight sets to Nishesh Basavareddy in the match that would have advanced him to the 128-player main draw.

However, as one of the highest ranked players to lose in the final round of qualifying, Gea was awarded a “lucky loser” place in the main draw when the 20th seed Casper Ruud pulled out with a back injury.

€400,000 payday from US Open run

Gea’s run to the last-16 earned him €412,000 in prize money and a berth in the top 50 in the ATP world rankings.

The success also placed him on the radar of France’s Davis Cup skipper Paul-Henri Mathieu.

In August, Mathieu selected Arthur Fils, Arthur Rinderknech, Quentin Halys and Pierre-Hugues Herbert for the trip to Canada.

On Monday,Fils withdrew from the Davis Cup squad to continue his recuperation after slumping to a first round loss in New York to the former world number three Stefanos Tsitsipas.

“Very disappointed to have to give up the Davis Cup,” said Fils who was seeded 10th for the US Open on the back of his surge to the Cincinnati Masters 1000 title.

“After a complicated year physically and several periods of rest, I have to be cautious. With my team, we have decided to take full stock before resuming training and preparing for the rest of the season,” added Fils.

“Representing France means a lot to me, so it’s never an easy decision to make. I will obviously be behind the guys and the whole team.”

Gea will be in contention for a spot in the Davis Cup squad with Benjamin Bonzi who lost in the third round in New York as well as Luca Van Assche who reached the second round in New York after seeing off the 29th seed Cameron Norrie in the opening round.
