Nigerian midfielder Kelechi Nwakali has secured a fresh start abroad after completing a permanent switch to Cyprius outfit Omonia 29 Maiou, marking his exit from English League One side Barnsley.

The 28-year-old’s arrival makes him the second Super Eagles star to join the club within a matter of days, following goalkeeper Francis Uzoho, who penned a deal there just last week.

His move brings an end to a two-year spell in South Yorkshire, one that began after he made the switch from Portuguese club Chaves.

Nwakali’s first season at Barnsley showed promise, as he contributed two goals across 26 outings in all competitions, catching the eye with his contribution in midfield.

However, things took a different turn in his second campaign, where he found himself unable to command a regular starting role, seeing his game time significantly reduced.

His departure now sets him on a new path in Cyprus, where he’ll be looking to rebuild momentum and reestablish himself as a key player following a frustrating end to his time in England.

Reuniting with fellow countryman Uzoho at Omonia could also help ease his transition into a new league and football culture.

Nwakali, once regarded as one of Nigeria’s brightest young talents after captaining the country’s U-17 side to World Cup glory, will be eager to use this move as a platform to reignite his career.
