The Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee has officially dismissed a petition against Benjamin Kalu, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives. The committee ruled that there was no initial evidence of wrongdoing to justify formal disciplinary action against the lawmaker.

In a decision finalized on Wednesday, the committee explained that the specific allegations raised in the complaint did not fall under its legal authority. The petition, submitted by lawyer John Martins, claimed that Kalu participated in the National Youth Service Corps program at the same time he was attending the Nigerian Law School in 2011. Martins argued that this dual involvement violated national regulations and involved false declarations during Kalu’s entry into the legal profession.

The ruling, signed by senior panel member Umeh Kalu, clarified that the complaint was both procedurally flawed and outside the committee’s specific mandate. While the panel noted that the paperwork was incorrectly addressed, it primarily focused on the fact that the allegations involved criminal claims and events that happened before Kalu was officially enrolled as a lawyer.

The committee emphasized that its role is strictly limited to regulating the professional conduct of lawyers after they have been called to the Bar. It stated that it does not have the power to investigate the administrative operations of the Nigerian Law School or the National Youth Service Corps. Consequently, the panel concluded that the applicant failed to provide sufficient evidence to require a response from the Deputy Speaker. Kalu has not yet commented on the decision.
