Christantus Uche’s preparations for the new La Liga season have suffered a major setback after the Nigerian midfielder was ruled out for the remainder of the 2026/27 campaign because of a serious knee injury.

The 23-year-old Getafe player sustained the injury during a pre-season meeting with AS Monaco on Thursday.

Uche was unable to continue and had to be taken from the pitch on a stretcher after a challenge by Monaco defender Christian Mawissa, who received a straight red card for the incident.

The initial diagnosis suggested that Uche had suffered a heavy knock, raising hopes that the injury might not be too serious.

However, subsequent medical examinations delivered a much more concerning outcome. An MRI scan reportedly revealed several ligament and meniscus tears in his right knee.

Uche is expected to undergo surgery soon, after which he will begin an extended rehabilitation process. The recovery period means he is unlikely to feature for Getafe again this season, dealing a significant blow to the club’s plans ahead of the new campaign.

The injury is particularly disappointing for Uche, who had returned to Getafe following a loan spell with Crystal Palace.

He was expected to compete for an important role in Jose Bordalas’ squad and build on his experience from his time away from the Spanish club.

Nigeria will also feel the impact of his absence. The midfielder is now set to miss the Super Eagles’ forthcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying fixtures, removing another option from the national team’s midfield.

For Getafe, Uche’s absence leaves the club with the difficult task of adjusting its plans and finding alternatives in midfield.

For the player himself, attention will now turn to surgery, rehabilitation and a gradual return to full fitness.

The setback comes at an especially frustrating moment, as Uche had been looking forward to the new season and the opportunity to establish himself more firmly at Getafe.

His immediate priority will be recovery as he begins what is expected to be a lengthy road back to competitive football.
