Charity Is Just Giving Because You Want To – DJ Cuppy
Nigerian disc jockey Florence Otedola, popularly known as DJ Cuppy, has shared her perspective on philanthropy, distinguishing it from charity.
In an interview with Marie Claire, she explained that charity often involves giving, while philanthropy should focus on creating lasting solutions to social problems.
Cuppy also opened up about the daily marriage proposals she receives, joking that everyone seems eager to help her find a partner even though she never asked for assistance.
She humorously linked the proposals to her grandmother’s persistent questions about marriage.
She also reflected on her relationship with her father, billionaire businessman Femi Otedola, noting how her growing fame has occasionally reversed their public identities.
She said:
“I get marriage proposals every day. And I’m not even talking about fans.”
“Everyone is apparently trying to help me when I have not asked to be helped.”
“With entertainment, I have never just wanted to participate. I want to understand who controls what and learn as much about their processes as possible.”
“Recently, my dad told me that someone stopped him at the airport to take a picture because they recognised him as ‘Cuppy’s dad’.”
“It made me feel good because normally, I’m Femi’s daughter, but on that day, to that person, he was my dad.”
“Charity is just giving because you want to.”
