Former Ghanaian boxer Michael Ayitey Okai, popularly known as Ayitey Powers, has been freed after the Dansoman Circuit Court discontinued a case involving an alleged death threat against National Sports Authority (NSA) Director-General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah.

Ayitey Powers appeared before the court on Wednesday, 2 September 2026, after spending a week in custody in connection with the case.

The former boxer was arrested following a video circulated on social media in which he was alleged to have made threatening comments against Ampofo Ankrah.

The Ghana Boxing Interim Management Committee (GBIMC) subsequently called for his arrest and prosecution over the alleged remarks.

The Accra Regional Police Command arrested Ayitey Powers on 24 August and subsequently brought him before the Dansoman Circuit Court.

He was remanded for one week as the case proceeded, with the court scheduled to hear the matter again on Wednesday.

However, when Ayitey Powers returned to court on 2 September, the case was discontinued, bringing the legal proceedings against him to an end.

The development comes at a time of heightened tensions within Ghana’s boxing community, with disagreements over the administration, governance and development of the sport continuing to generate public debate among stakeholders.

Ayitey Powers is one of Ghana’s best-known boxers and has remained a prominent figure in the country’s boxing fraternity since his retirement from active competition.
