Ouagadougou New footage circulating online appears to show Burkinabè security forces engaging fighters from Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) during several operations in northern Burkina Faso.

According to the account accompanying the footage, Burkinabè forces recently defeated a JNIM unit that attempted to ambush a convoy traveling toward Titao, in the country’s Loroum Province. The engagement reportedly resulted in the death of local JNIM commander Khalidou Tall.

The footage is also said to document fighting around Djibo, one of the principal security flashpoints in Burkina Faso’s Sahel Region. At approximately 2:26, militants allegedly attempting to breach defensive positions on the outskirts of the town are shown being engaged and neutralized by government forces.

A third engagement reportedly occurred around Kiembara, where JNIM fighters were allegedly detected while assembling for an attack. Burkinabè forces reportedly responded with coordinated air and ground strikes, disrupting the planned operation before the militants could launch their assault.

The reported operations come against the backdrop of an enduring JNIM insurgency across northern Burkina Faso. Djibo has repeatedly been targeted by the al-Qaeda-linked group, which has sought to isolate government positions and disrupt supply routes serving communities and military installations in the region.

The strategic importance of the Titao–Djibo area is considerable. JNIM has repeatedly used ambushes, attacks on military positions and the disruption of roads to place pressure on towns and security forces. Previous attacks on convoys supplying northern cities demonstrated the vulnerability of these routes and the importance of effective reconnaissance and air support.

The latest footage, if accurately identified and geolocated, would indicate that Burkinabè forces are increasingly relying on intelligence, surveillance and rapid air-ground coordination to detect militant concentrations before they can execute attacks.

However, battlefield footage circulating on social media should be treated cautiously. The identities of fighters, exact locations, dates and casualty figures cannot always be established independently from video alone. In particular, the reported death of JNIM commander Khalidou Tall requires additional independent confirmation.

What is clear is that the security contest in northern Burkina Faso remains intense. JNIM continues to demonstrate the ability to conduct coordinated attacks across the region, while Burkinabè forces are attempting to counter the insurgency through mobile ground operations, fortified positions and air support.

Reuters reported in February 2026 that JNIM had claimed hundreds of attacks in Burkina Faso during 2025, underscoring the scale of the continuing insurgency.

The latest operations therefore represent another episode in the broader struggle for control of northern Burkina Faso, where both government forces and JNIM continue to compete for territory, mobility and access to key population centres.
